— A/B TESTING — JUN 23, 2026 —

Inside Shopify Spring 2026 Edition (Complete Teardown)

Shopify shipped Spring '26 Edition on June 17 with more than 200 features across 10 categories. Most agency recaps stop at the four or five headline announcements. The reality is that Shopify rebuilt or replaced significant parts of the platform in this single release. Agentic commerce, Sidekick, the online storefront, retail and POS, marketing, operations, the Shop app, payments, finance, and the developer platform all received material upgrades. This is the complete teardown, organized the way Shopify organized it.

Quick read: Spring '26 Edition is a 200+ feature release. The strategic moves: Shopify Catalog and Universal Commerce Protocol go general availability as the agent layer for ecommerce. Sidekick gains app integrations, Apple Watch, multi-tasking, and customer creation. POS v11 saves over a minute per checkout. Campaign Autopilot ships as Klaviyo's first real competitor inside Shopify. Shop Pay opens to any platform with 250M+ shoppers. Hydrogen rebuilds on any stack including Next.js. The Agentic Plan pulls non-Shopify merchants into Shopify's distribution. Shopify Scripts dies June 30. Six concrete app categories are at risk. Read the full teardown and the action items by category below.

The strategic framing

Editions used to be horizontal feature dumps. Spring '26 reads as a coordinated platform repositioning. Four shifts to read together.

First, Shopify is becoming infrastructure for AI commerce, not just a storefront platform. Shopify Catalog ships as a structured-data product. Universal Commerce Protocol exits experimental status. The Agentic Plan lets non-Shopify merchants plug into the same agentic distribution. Shopify is now positioning to be the commerce engine behind ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Gemini regardless of which storefront a brand uses.

Second, Shopify is absorbing app categories at an accelerating pace. Native AI merchandising, native A/B testing, Campaign Autopilot, native storefront search improvements, and Smart Pricing all compete directly with apps merchants have paid third parties to handle for years. The pattern is faster than any previous Edition.

Third, the merchant interface is moving away from the browser. Sidekick on Apple Watch. Sidekick everywhere inside the mobile Shopify app. Voice support. Sidekick creating customers from a sentence. The implication is that "Shopify Admin" as a destination is starting to fade. The merchant talks to Sidekick. Sidekick does the work.

Fourth, the developer story leans hard into agent-native architecture. Shopify AI Toolkit ships for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and VS Code. The platform integrates with Manus, Replit, V0, and Lovable. Store management via Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity is documented. Hydrogen rebuilds for any stack including Next.js via a Vercel collaboration. This is Shopify making it cheap to build on the platform from inside the AI dev tools that engineers actually use.

Read the 200 features in context of these four shifts. Most of the announcements ladder up to one of them.

Category 1 - Agentic

The Agentic section is the most strategically important block in the release. Eleven distinct features that together make Shopify the default commerce layer for AI agent surfaces.

Shopify Catalog standardizes and enriches product data so AI systems read it cleanly. Shopify claims 2x more conversion in AI chats versus non-syndicated data. This is the structured-data product we have been waiting for. Detailed architectural context is on the Shopify Engineering UCP post.

Universal Commerce Protocol powers shopping in Microsoft Copilot, with Shop Pay integration. Meta ads support is coming soon. The protocol covers Catalog, Cart, and Checkout via MCP endpoints. Our pillar guide on autonomous commerce covers the broader context.

Agentic Plan is the unlock. Non-Shopify businesses can sync their product data into Shopify Catalog and sell across AI channels and the Shop app. This is Shopify's TAM expansion. WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and custom-built stores can now plug into Shopify's agentic distribution without migrating their storefront.

Sponsored Products with Catalog API is in developer preview. This is the monetization layer that turns agentic discovery into a paid placement market. Expect this to be Shopify's next major revenue engine once it goes live.

Catalog API supports Shop Sign-In for personalized search results. Once a shopper signs in with Shop, every agent surface that uses Catalog gets access to their preferences and history. This is the moat. The more shoppers signed in, the better the agentic results, the more agents adopt Catalog.

Catalog API Image Search ships visual similarity matching. Snap a photo, find products that look like it across every merchant on Catalog. Compete directly with Perplexity Snap to Shop, which we covered in our piece on how AI agents now shop on behalf of shoppers.

Catalog API Product Lookup retrieves up to 50 products per request with real-time pricing and availability. This is the bulk-fetch API that lets agents build comparison shopping experiences without dozens of round trips.

Richer Product Data in Agentic Experiences covers media, variants, availability, and multi-seller offers in real time. Agentic surfaces get the same depth a product page would render.

Five demo experiences shipped: All Set (travel planning), Sourced (board game discovery), Starred (show inspiration), Showroom (photo lookalikes), and Pippin (astrology-based shopping). These are not products. They are proof points showing what is possible on Catalog + UCP for developers building vertical agentic experiences.

What to do: Opt into Catalog now if you have a Shopify store. The first 6 months of agentic traffic favor merchants whose data is clean and indexed early. Brands that wait will be playing catch-up against early adopters with better positioning.

Category 2 - Sidekick

Sidekick went from a chat assistant to a working operator in this release. Nine distinct improvements.

Sidekick Works with Your Apps is the headline. Judge.me, Klaviyo, Loop, and Smile have shipped integrations. You can ask Sidekick "how is the Klaviyo welcome flow performing this month" and the answer comes from Klaviyo's data, surfaced inside Sidekick. The lock-in implications are real. Once Sidekick becomes your operating layer, you stop opening individual app dashboards. The apps that ship Sidekick extensions get distribution. The ones that do not become invisible.

Sidekick Pulse cards appear in admin home with actionable conversion and repeat-sales optimization tips. This is the proactive surface we covered in our piece on autonomous Shopify store operations.

Sidekick on Apple Watch lets you check business information from the wrist. Most merchants will use this for at-a-glance metrics during retail shifts or while traveling.

Follow-Up Questions from Sidekick ships multiple-choice clarification when the agent needs more context. Reduces the back-and-forth that plagues first-generation chat agents.

Multi-Task with Sidekick means background task continuation across chat sessions and window closures. You can ask Sidekick to compile a report, close the window, come back later, and the work has progressed.

Improved Editing for Sidekick-Generated Apps includes a code editor with preview, desktop and mobile, and version history tracking. The vibe-coding workflow inside Shopify is real now.

Sidekick Everywhere in the Shopify App means voice and text capabilities across every screen, including mobile store editing. This is where the merchant interface starts moving off the desktop entirely.

Sidekick Creates Customers auto-populates new customer records from natural language descriptions. Tell Sidekick "create a new customer for John Smith at 123 Main Street, VIP tier" and the record is built.

Automation Tests with Sidekick generates test events for Shopify Flow logic verification. Reduces the cost of building and debugging Flow automations.

What to do: Train your team to use Sidekick as the first stop for any admin task. The merchants who move their workflow into Sidekick this quarter compound the time savings over the rest of the year.

Category 3 - Online (storefront)

The Online category is where Shopify ate two app categories in one release. Twenty-plus features. The most important ones below.

Your AI Sales Associate is Shopify Inbox with AI for online stores. For shoppers signed in with Shop, it recommends products based on history and integrates Shop Pay. This eats part of the chat commerce category.

Storefront Search Delivers More Results ships typo tolerance and unusual phrasing handling. Native search now handles the queries that previously required Klevu, Algolia, or Searchanise. Brands paying $200-1,500 per month for those tools will audit lift.

AI-Powered Store Analysis on Any Theme introduces SimGym simulations with AI-generated shopper data and theme improvement suggestions. This is an autonomous CRO advisor inside the Admin.

A/B Tests on Online Store and Checkout via Rollouts. Scheduled theme and checkout configuration publishing, with split testing built in. Replaces Intelligems, Trident, Convert.com for basic CRO. Our CRO framework piece covers what this means for the conversion-optimization workflow.

Variant-Level Publishing for products gives per-channel and per-market variant control. The workaround-shaped problem that plagued multi-market sellers since 2022 is now native.

B2B Features on More Plans extends company profiles, volume pricing, and up to three B2B catalogs to Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans at no extra cost. We covered the strategic significance of this in earlier coverage. It is the most important B2B expansion in Shopify history.

Stacking Multiple Product Discounts finally allows percentage and fixed amount combinations. The thing every merchant has asked for since 2020.

Refreshed Customer Accounts ships intuitive navigation, branded sign-in pages, and first-time shopper recommendations. The customer account UX is finally what merchants needed.

365-Day Sessions for Customer Accounts. Customers stay signed in for a full year. The repeat-purchase math just changed in your favor. Apps that exist to overcome the friction of re-authentication lose a use case.

Customer Data Syncs from Identity Providers. Auth0, Ping Identity, and Azure AD support for profile field and custom tag synchronization. The enterprise SSO story is now native.

Shopify Smart Pricing App ships product-level pricing recommendations based on sales, inventory, costs, and seasonality. This competes with Prisync, Intelligems, and other paid pricing tools.

What to do: Audit your Klevu, Algolia, Searchanise, Intelligems, Prisync, customer account portal, and identity sync apps against the new native capabilities. Most paid solutions in these categories just lost their primary differentiation.

Category 4 - Retail (POS)

The retail category is the single largest non-online platform investment Shopify has shipped. POS v11 is the headline. Twenty distinct improvements.

Our Fastest-Ever POS claims over a minute saved per customer creation, product add, and checkout. For a busy retail store doing 100 transactions per day, that compounds to over an hour and a half saved daily, or 45 hours per month per location.

Verifone Victa Mobile is the new handheld scan-plus-payment device. Pre-orders open for US and Canada. Brick-and-mortar brands get a single device for inventory scanning and customer payment.

Returns and Exchanges in One Cart combines refund, exchange, and new sale processing in a single transaction. Staff stop running three separate workflows. This eliminates a category of friction that retail merchants have lived with forever.

In-Person Pickup Orders let you create orders for any retail location with customer notification and fulfillment marking, exclusive to POS Pro. The buy-online-pickup-in-store flow is now first-class.

Gift Card Cashout handles low-balance gift card cash-out from POS with local redemption law compliance. Solves a recurring customer complaint at retail.

In-Store Only Discounts support code-based and automatic in-person-only promotions. Critical for omnichannel brands that want different price points in retail vs online.

Multi-Entity Selling Across Retail Locations supports multiple legal entities within a single country managed from one Shopify store. Exclusive to Shopify Plus. Solves the holding-company problem for portfolio brands.

Tap to Pay for Multi-Entity Businesses with iPhone and Android support, activated at any retail location. Plus only.

Cash Visibility and Control ships cash rules, reason codes, drawer activity tracking, mid-session counts, and audit trail reconciliation. POS Pro only. Eliminates the spreadsheet workflows that retail managers run every closing shift.

Scannable Discounts generate QR codes in admin that can be scanned at checkout. Print one QR on a poster, every customer who scans it gets the discount.

Permission Settings for Customer Data ship granular staff access controls. Limit visibility of sensitive customer details by role.

Manual Offline Checkout lets staff initiate offline mode from device settings. Solves the connectivity loss problem that has plagued POS for years.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Shopify POS accelerate cart building and navigation. Power-user feature that compounds across high-volume retail.

What to do: If you have retail locations, upgrade to POS v11. The time savings alone are worth the migration cost. If you are on POS Pro, audit the new permission settings and cash controls. If you are Plus and run multiple entities, the multi-entity capabilities are a game-changing simplification.

Category 5 - Marketing

The marketing category is where Klaviyo finally gets a real native competitor inside Shopify. Twelve features.

Campaign Autopilot runs campaigns across channels with AI that learns, optimizes, and drives performance. Guardrail controls and long-term result tracking. This is the autonomous marketing layer. For mid-market brands that pay Klaviyo $300-3,000 per month for what is effectively rule-based campaign management, this is a direct competitor.

Shop Campaigns on More Channels adds ChatGPT and Pinterest, with Microsoft Monetize programmatic ads support. The multi-channel orchestration story is real.

WhatsApp Marketing Channel ships via Shopify Messaging. Campaign creation and management for WhatsApp at the merchant level. This is a big deal for India, Brazil, and any market where WhatsApp is the dominant messaging surface.

SMS and Marketing Automations through Shopify Messaging, with SMS automation inclusion. Postscript and Attentive now have a native competitor in their core territory.

Smart Email Delivery uses conversion-optimized message prioritization and intelligent holdback logic. Klaviyo has had this for years. Shopify now has it natively.

Standardized Ads Billing for Shop Campaigns consolidates Meta, Google, and other ad spend into a single Shopify invoice with centralized reporting.

Discount Links Attributed to Campaigns close the loop on traffic and conversion tracking from discount-coded promotions.

Fixed Bundles on Google Shopping and Meta ships pre-configured bundle publishing across Google search, ads, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

What to do: Audit your Klaviyo, Postscript, Attentive, and email automation spend against Campaign Autopilot. If you are a mid-market brand on Klaviyo's mid-tier plan, the comparison math is now worth doing.

Category 6 - Operations

The Operations category is the largest section by feature count. Forty-plus updates across Admin, Inventory, Shipping, and Global. Highlights only.

Plugins (the new AI-platform integration layer): Shopify AI Toolkit ships for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and VS Code, letting developers manage stores from inside their IDE. Vibe-coding partners include Manus, Replit, V0, and Lovable for natural-language store creation. Store Management with Agents (Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity) lets merchants manage products, collections, and orders from chat. This is the biggest developer-experience expansion in Shopify's history.

Admin: Daily insights in Analytics. New data visualizations including scatter plots, radars, bubble charts, sunbursts. Annotations in Analytics charts. Metric targets. Multi-metric visualizations. Analytics filtered by metafields. Metafields added inline in workflows. Up to 50 pinned metafields per object. Discounts on refund page. Custom pricing on draft orders. Filtering and saved views across the admin.

Inventory: Sidekick purchasing assistance. Barcode-based shipment receiving with GS1-128 scanning. SKU sharing required across locations. Faster inventory syncing for high-traffic events. Pickup order fulfillment from multiple sources. Inventory tracking separated from active products. Smarter purchase order workflows with Sidekick generation. Order cancellation requests for pre-fulfillment.

Shipping: Batch fulfillment workflow with customizable pick-pack-scan-ship. FedEx One Rate flat-rate shipping in US. Advanced shipping options with order value and weight conditions. Local pickup emails. Manual delivery confirmation. Shipping labels billed in local currency (CAD, EUR, GBP). FedEx in Managed Markets including International Connect Plus. DHL Kleinpaket in Germany. Delivery carrier auto-detection. UPS return labels in US.

Global: Managed Markets in UK and Canada. Managed International Pricing Strategy with dynamic localization. Faster setup for Managed Markets. Duty calculation breakdowns. Gift cards in local currencies.

What to do: If you run international, the UK and Canada Managed Markets expansion is the most important change. If you have multi-warehouse inventory, the SKU sharing and barcode receiving updates are productivity wins. If you are a developer working on Shopify stores daily, install the AI Toolkit for your IDE this week.

Category 7 - Shop App

The Shop app is increasingly Shopify's consumer-facing brand. Nine updates.

Search Designed Around Shoppers ships conversation-based product discovery with taste and history-based recommendations.

Online to In Person with the Shop App connects local shoppers to retail stores with in-store pickup offerings.

Shop Skill for Personal AI Agents integrates with OpenClaw, Hermes, and other AI agents. Shop-approved purchasing across every merchant on Shopify, from any agent that integrates the Shop Skill.

Blocks in Shop Editor ship customizable product detail pages with slideshow, collection, video, and media content blocks.

Demand Indicators and Inventory Alerts identify trending items and flag low inventory inside the Shop app.

Merchandised Categories introduce curated product and brand browsing with category-specific navigation.

Posts in the Shop App appear in home feed, following feed, and store product pages. Shopify-native social commerce.

Shop Minis Across the App get placement in home feed, top navigation, and product pages. Expanded surface visibility for developer-built Shop Minis.

What to do: If you have a Shopify store and have not enabled Shop, do it this week. The Shop app is becoming the consumer surface where Shopify's own AI commerce works best.

Category 8 - Payments

Payments shipped the most strategically significant feature in the release. Eighteen updates.

Shop Pay Available to Any Brand on Any Platform. 250M+ Shop Pay shoppers, now accessible to brands on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and custom builds. One-click purchasing without switching platforms. This is Shopify treating Shop Pay as a standalone product, similar to PayPal or Apple Pay.

Managed Payment Methods dynamically reorders payment options for conversion optimization based on the shopper's market and behavior.

Ship and Pick Up in One Checkout lets customers mix fulfillment methods (some items shipped, some picked up) in a single transaction. Brick-and-mortar plus online brands have been asking for this since omnichannel became a buzzword.

Deeper Dispute Insights explain why disputes open, win, or lose, with tailored chargeback evidence recommendations.

Shop Pay Includes More Local Payment Methods with global local and regional payment method expansion.

Meses Sin Intereses ships as a Mexico installment payment option with customer plan selection.

Shopify Payments Available in the UAE for Plus merchants.

Multi-Currency Payouts for US, Hong Kong, and Singapore merchants. France coming soon. Reduces conversion fees on cross-border revenue.

Multi-Entity Selling from the Same Country supports multiple legal entities with different Shopify Payments accounts per entity. Plus only.

Local Payment Methods in More Countries. MobilePay, TWINT, BLIK, Przelewy24. The European payment-method gap closes.

Cashback for Paying with USDC on Base network. Automatic crypto wallet deposit. The crypto commerce story finally has a real merchant incentive.

Accept More USDC with Ethereum, Base, and multi-chain support with automatic fund bridging.

Enhanced Fraud Prevention for Card Testing via machine learning model improvements and transaction risk scoring.

Chargeback Health Monitoring with proactive alerts and standing improvement guidance.

Higher-Converting, Redesigned Checkout includes scannability improvements, pay button elevation, and reduced mobile scrolling.

VAT ID Validation at Checkout for EU and UK with Shopify Tax integration.

Faster, More Accurate Address Suggestions for US, Canada, Australia, France, and Netherlands.

Customized Branding in Checkout, Accounts, and Sign-In applies logo, color, typography from a single setting across pages. Brand consistency without engineering.

What to do: If you sell in any of the new geographies, enable the local payment methods. The conversion lift from native payment options consistently beats card-only checkout by 15-25% in those markets. If you are not on Shopify but want Shop Pay's 250M+ shopper reach, the application opens this quarter. For broader checkout context, our 2026 checkout optimization guide sets the foundation.

Category 9 - Finance

The finance category is small but materially important for merchants who manage cash flow. Seven updates.

Cashback on Ad Spend from Shopify Balance covers Meta and Google qualifying payments, plus ACH and wire transfers. US only. The cashback math compounds for any brand spending $10K+ monthly on paid acquisition.

Shopify Tax Available in Canada with auto-calculation, product category-based computation, and liability threshold tracking.

Cash in Shopify Balance supports participating retailer cash deposits via barcode. Useful for brands operating with cash-heavy retail or partner deposit networks.

Funding Paid with Shopify Payments means Shopify Capital repayment from your Payments balance instead of bank account debits. Smooths cash flow.

Repayment Control for Shopify Capital Flex Account lets you adjust repayment rate at any time and borrow remaining capacity flexibly. US only.

Shopify Capital Available in France with daily-sales-based automatic repayment.

Domestic Wire Transfers from Shopify Balance ship at $10 per transfer for US merchants paying vendors.

What to do: If you are US-based and spend significantly on Meta and Google ads, the Shopify Balance cashback program changes the effective CAC math. Move ad billing to Shopify Balance to capture the cashback.

Category 10 - Developer

The developer category is where Spring '26 quietly delivers the long-tail platform changes that compound across the next 12 months. Thirty-plus updates split between Platform and Apps + Extensions.

Platform updates include Commerce Skills for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Hermes; field-change-specific webhook triggers; GraphQL and bulk operations via Shopify CLI; all Partner stores consolidated in Dev Dashboard; an App Events API for performance monitoring; localized Dev Dashboard; revamped Polaris Docs with more code samples; metafields in ShopifyQL; auto-upgrades and semantic versioning in Shopify CLI; safer app deployments via CI/CD controls; streamlined metafields and metaobjects API; discount configuration with Admin UI Extensions; accelerated checkout support for add-ons; declarative metaobjects without scopes; metaobject data in checkout functions; billing address and PO number in Shopify Functions; Shopify AI Toolkit for Polaris Web Components migration; role-based access for partners with 7 system roles plus custom roles; improved webhook monitoring; app automation tokens for CI/CD; admin web vital monitoring; parallel reads for bulk queries (4x faster); Shopify Dev MCP optimized token usage; and Shopify Dev MCP for all API versions.

Apps + Extensions updates include simple billing with Shopify App Pricing (usage, recurring, hybrid models); Shop Minis placement in more parts of Shop; refreshed Checkout And Accounts Configuration API; WhatsApp marketing consent storage; access to Sign-In with Shop from any app; Shopify AI Toolkit for checkout extension optimization; All-New Hydrogen on Any Stack with Vercel collaboration (Next.js + any React framework, developer preview); prerequisites in product discount functions; bulk editing extensions for discounts; cash management extensions; SKU sharing by default; multi-channel support for sales channel apps; Customer Account Web Component (Shopify-managed account UI you can embed anywhere); standard storefront events and actions; streamlined App Store submission; Customer Account API authentication requirement for returns and subscription apps; intents for Shop Minis; color palettes for themes; and new Collections API with composable source groups and variant-level conditions.

The Hydrogen on Any Stack release is the headline. Hydrogen has been rebuilt with agent-first architecture in collaboration with Vercel. It now runs on Next.js and any React framework, not just Shopify's own Oxygen hosting. Lock-in concerns that kept some agencies away from Hydrogen are gone. For technical context on the headless-vs-Liquid decision, our Hydrogen and headless commerce guide covers the architectural tradeoffs.

What to do: If you build apps on Shopify, install the Shopify AI Toolkit for your preferred IDE this week. Migrate to Shopify App Pricing for billing. If you build storefronts, evaluate the new Hydrogen-on-Next.js path against your current stack. The Vercel collaboration changes the math on hosting decisions.

Shopify Scripts dies June 30

The most time-sensitive item in the release is not technically a Spring '26 feature. It is the final cutoff for Shopify Scripts, scheduled for June 30, 2026. Any custom discount logic, shipping rule, or payment condition still running through Scripts will silently stop working that day. The deadline has been pushed twice before (originally August 2024, then August 2025). It will not be pushed a third time.

The migration target is Shopify Functions. Functions are not Scripts with a new syntax. The architecture is fundamentally different. Functions are compiled WebAssembly modules running inside Shopify's core infrastructure at specific lifecycle points. A focused migration of 5 to 15 Scripts typically takes 8 to 14 weeks including scoping, development, QA on a dev store, and production cutover with monitoring.

If you have not started, the realistic options now are short. Disable the affected logic and accept the revenue hit until you migrate. Install a public app from the Shopify App Store that mimics the most common Script patterns. Or ship an emergency Function build in the next 7 days with a senior developer. None of the three are great. The least-bad option for most Plus brands is the public-app route as a temporary bridge while engineering catches up.

The app categories at risk

Read Spring '26 across all 10 categories and the app-category-risk map is clear. Six categories where Shopify just shipped native competitors strong enough to threaten incumbent revenue.

  • Personalization apps compete with native AI merchandising.
  • A/B testing apps compete with native Rollouts.
  • Storefront search apps compete with improved native search.
  • Email marketing apps compete with Smart Email Delivery and Campaign Autopilot.
  • SMS marketing apps compete with Shopify Messaging SMS automation.
  • Dynamic pricing apps compete with Shopify Smart Pricing.

The premium apps in each category survive on deeper functionality, multi-store management, advanced statistics, or vertical specialization. The thin apps in each category should be audited and cancelled within the next 90 days. Our broader analysis of where AI is reshaping the Shopify app ecosystem is covered in our piece on autonomous Shopify store operations.

What every Shopify merchant should do in the next 30 days

Ten concrete actions, ranked by urgency.

  1. Migrate or replace any active Scripts before June 30. 7 days left.
  2. Opt into Shopify Catalog for agentic discovery in ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity.
  3. Audit your app stack against the six at-risk categories. Mark each as keep, downgrade, or cancel.
  4. Test Checkout Components (Plus only). Build one variant.
  5. Plan your first native A/B test using Rollouts.
  6. Upgrade to POS v11 if you have retail locations.
  7. Enable Sidekick app integrations for Klaviyo, Judge.me, Loop, Smile if applicable.
  8. Move ad billing to Shopify Balance if US-based, to capture the cashback.
  9. Enable Managed Markets in UK and Canada if you sell internationally.
  10. Brief your team on what Sidekick can now do. Build the muscle of asking Sidekick first.

What is in Shopify Spring 2026 Edition?

Shopify Spring '26 Edition shipped on June 17, 2026 with 200+ updates organized across 10 categories. The most important strategic moves are Shopify Catalog (structured product data for AI agents) reaching general availability, the Agentic Plan (which lets non-Shopify merchants plug into Shopify's agentic distribution), Universal Commerce Protocol powering shopping in Microsoft Copilot, Shop Pay opening to any platform with 250M+ shoppers, Sidekick gaining app integrations and Apple Watch support, POS v11 saving over a minute per checkout, Campaign Autopilot as Klaviyo's first real native competitor, native AI merchandising and native A/B testing, the final Shopify Scripts sunset on June 30, and Hydrogen rebuilt to run on any React stack including Next.js via a Vercel collaboration.

When do Shopify Scripts officially stop working?

June 30, 2026. After that date, any active Shopify Scripts on your store stop executing entirely. Custom discount logic, shipping rules, and payment conditions that depend on Scripts will silently fail. The deadline has been postponed twice before (originally August 2024, then August 2025) and Shopify confirmed it will not extend again. If you have not migrated, your options in the next 7 days are emergency Function development, installing a public app that replicates your Script behavior, or temporarily disabling the affected logic until you can ship a proper Function migration.

What is Shopify Catalog and should I opt in?

Shopify Catalog is a new product in Spring '26 that standardizes and enriches product data so AI systems (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity) can read it cleanly. Shopify reports that catalog data syndicated through this layer drives roughly twice the conversion in AI chats compared to raw product data. If you are a Shopify merchant and want your products to surface inside agent surfaces, opt in early. The merchants who opt in during 2026 get better positioning as agent traffic grows. The merchants who wait will be playing catch-up against competitors with cleaner agent-readable data.

What is the Agentic Plan for non-Shopify merchants?

The Agentic Plan is a new Shopify offering announced in Spring '26 that lets brands NOT on Shopify sync their products into Shopify Catalog and sell across AI channels and the Shop app. The merchant keeps their existing storefront (WooCommerce, BigCommerce, custom build) but plugs into Shopify's agentic distribution layer. This is Shopify positioning itself as commerce infrastructure for AI shopping regardless of which platform a merchant uses for their own online store. For Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce merchants who want exposure to ChatGPT and Copilot shopping flows, the Agentic Plan is the cleanest entry point without a full platform migration.

Which apps should I cancel after Spring 2026?

Audit six categories where Shopify shipped strong native competitors. Personalization apps (compete with native AI merchandising). A/B testing apps (compete with Rollouts). Storefront search apps (compete with improved native search). Email marketing apps (compete with Smart Email Delivery and Campaign Autopilot). SMS marketing apps (compete with Shopify Messaging SMS automation). Dynamic pricing apps (compete with Shopify Smart Pricing). For each app in these categories, run a 30-day A/B test comparing native vs paid. If the paid app delivers less than 3 to 5 percent measurable lift over native, cancel it. The premium apps with deeper functionality, multi-store management, advanced statistics, or vertical specialization usually survive the comparison. The thin apps usually do not.

What does Spring 26 Edition signal about Shopify's broader strategy?

Shopify is positioning itself as the commerce infrastructure layer behind AI shopping, regardless of which platform a merchant uses for their own storefront. The Catalog, Universal Commerce Protocol, Agentic Plan, and Shop Pay open-platform launch all point in this direction. The platform is also absorbing app categories at an accelerating pace. Personalization, A/B testing, search, email marketing, SMS, dynamic pricing, customer accounts, and storefront automation are all moving from third-party apps into native platform functionality. Spring '26 absorbed six app categories at once, which is the fastest cadence Shopify has run. Expect the Winter '27 Edition to absorb another three to five categories. For merchants the takeaway is to run an annual app-stack audit. For app builders the takeaway is that horizontal apps are increasingly unsafe and vertical specialization or workflow orchestration are the surviving long-term positions.

What is the most important Spring 26 feature for Shopify Plus merchants?

Checkout Components reaching general availability is the most important Plus-specific change. Plus merchants can now make routine checkout customizations via drag-and-drop in the Shopify Admin instead of routing changes through a Plus Partner engineering ticket. The cost shift is estimated at $5,000 to $20,000 per year in agency savings for typical Plus brands, and the iteration speed improves from 2 to 4 weeks per change to a single afternoon. Combined with native A/B testing via Rollouts, Plus brands can ship and test a checkout variant in the same day. The previous workflow required dedicated agency capacity and multi-week scoping cycles. Spring '26 turns this into a daily product decision rather than a quarterly project.

Where this leaves things

Spring '26 is the most important Shopify Edition since checkout extensibility shipped in 2023. The combination of agentic infrastructure, Sidekick maturity, app-category absorption, payments expansion, and developer-platform agent-native architecture sets the trajectory for the next two years of the platform. Brands that audit their stack against Spring '26 in July and adopt the right native capabilities by August will compound the savings and capability gains through the rest of the year. Brands that ignore Spring '26 and continue running their pre-2026 stack will pay for redundant apps and miss the agentic distribution window that opens for early Catalog adopters.

If you want help running the app-stack audit against your store, planning a 90-day adoption roadmap for Spring '26 features, or working through whether the Agentic Plan applies to your business, the ExactWhy team is happy to take a look. Most of the work is unsexy spreadsheet analysis and a few opinionated decisions about which apps to keep and which to retire. The savings tend to be larger than merchants expect and the capability gains compound for the rest of the year.
